Gentil

History

The nice fit in the 20s to a blend of grapes from the same plot. These were indeed commonly planted different grape varieties, which vendangeait and vinified together.

Revived in recent years, Gentile is now the subject of an Interprofessional Charter which defines the conditions of its development.

The denomination Gentil is thus reserved for AOC Alsace wines that meet the standards of a superior assembly. This blend must consist of a minimum of 50% Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and/or Gewurztraminer, the rest being Sylvaner, Chasselas and/or Pinot Blanc. Before assembly, each grape variety must be vinified separately and must have obtained authorization AOC Alsace. Le Gentil must mention the vintage and can be marketed only after an approval tasting bottles.

Le Gentil differs from Edelzwicker which is also her a blended wine but can be composed of all white grape varieties of Alsace, without constraints or indication of proportion. In addition, the varieties of the Edelzwicker may be vinified together or separately.
