AOC Alsace Grand Cru

 

 

The concept of Grand Cru Alsace appears in the ninth century. This, the best soils are born know-how and experience of the wine growers, which revealed, in time, the most remarkable soil on slopes often impressive, boasting unique microclimates. Today, 51 land delimited according to strict geological and climatic criteria form the mosaic of Alsace Grands Crus. The wines made ​​from it represent 4% of the total production of the vineyard.

 

 

Defined areas

 

These localities exceptional , inspired by the historic centers of production were strictly delimited areas fragmented by the INAO (National Institute for Origin and Quality ) at several committee meetings.

1975 ( date of inception ) to 2007, 51 localities have gradually been defined, the area of ​​these plots varying from 3-80 hectares.

These localities have been recognized in 2011 as many appellations, each locality now enjoy protection as PDO. These AOC are subject to the most stringent production rules of the vineyard, some localities may also choose to further strengthen these rules ( Zotzenberg, Altenberg de Bergheim, Kaefferkopf), this orienting towards an ambitious and qualitative viticulture.

 

The Grands Crus of Alsace represent production
annual average of close to 45,000 hl, or only 4% of all Alsace wines.
