Edelzwicker

History

Regarding the blended wines, it should be recalled that the first mention of the vine variety on the label of AOC Alsace remains optional. It is therefore possible to find blended wines from several varietals in Alsace AOC without any particular mention is given on the label.

In practice, the term Edelzwicker still commonly used to refer to any assembly of white varieties of the AOC Alsace, without indicating percentage.

The grapes may be vinified together or separately. The mention of vintage is optional.

Historically, these different varietals came from the same plot. Originally called " Zwicker " ( assembly), we added the prefix Edel ( noble ) to mark the presence of noble grape varieties chosen to replace large grapes producers.

Edelzwicker is to differentiate the Gentile who is the subject of an Interprofessional Charter defining its terms of development. The denomination Gentil is thus reserved for AOC Alsace wines that meet the standards of a superior assembly. This blend must consist of a minimum of 50% Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and / or Gewurztraminer, the rest being Sylvaner, Chasselas and / or Pinot Blanc. Before assembly, each grape variety must be vinified separately and must have obtained authorization AOC Alsace. Le Gentil can not be marketed until a validation tasting bottles.
